How Does MRI Imaging Work?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most powerful and versatile diagnostic tools in modern medicine. Understanding how it works can help patients feel more confident and comfortable before their appointment.

The Basic Principle: Hydrogen Atoms and Magnetic Fields

The human body contains billions of hydrogen atoms, particularly in water and fat molecules. When a patient enters the MRI machine, a strong magnetic field causes these hydrogen atoms to align in a specific direction — similar to how a compass needle aligns with the Earth's magnetic field.

Radio Wave Pulses

Once the hydrogen atoms are aligned, the MRI machine sends pulses of radio frequency energy into the body. These pulses temporarily knock the hydrogen atoms out of alignment. When the pulse stops, the atoms return to their aligned state and emit small radio frequency signals in the process.

Building the Image

The MRI machine's sensors detect these emitted signals. Because different tissues (fat, water, muscle, bone) contain different densities of hydrogen atoms and behave differently in the magnetic field, the signals they emit vary. A computer processes all of this signal data and constructs detailed, cross-sectional images of the body's internal structures.

What Makes MRI Different from X-Ray and CT?

• No radiation: MRI uses magnetism and radio waves, not X-rays, making it radiation-free.
• Superior soft tissue contrast: MRI is exceptionally sensitive to soft tissue differences, making it the preferred modality for brain, spinal cord, joint, and organ imaging.
• Multi-planar imaging: MRI can generate images in any plane (axial, sagittal, coronal) without repositioning the patient.
