How Long Does an MRI Scan Take?

One of the most common questions patients ask before their first MRI is: how long will it take? The answer depends on the area being imaged and the specific clinical questions your physician needs to answer.

Typical MRI Scan Duration

Most MRI scans at Michigan Diagnostics Center take between 30 and 60 minutes. However, the duration can vary based on several factors:

• Area being scanned: A brain MRI may take 30 to 45 minutes, while a comprehensive spine MRI can take 45 to 60 minutes or longer.
• Number of sequences: Each imaging sequence takes additional time. Some studies require multiple sequences to fully characterize a finding.
• Use of contrast: Scans performed with intravenous contrast (gadolinium) require additional setup time for IV placement.
• Patient cooperation: Remaining still is essential for image clarity. Any movement may require sequences to be repeated.

Arriving for Your Appointment

We recommend arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete registration paperwork and change into a gown if needed. This ensures your scan starts on time and your overall visit is as efficient as possible.

What to Expect During the Scan

You will lie on a padded table that slides into the MRI machine. The machine makes loud knocking or tapping sounds during the scan — this is completely normal. We provide earplugs or headphones to help with the noise. Many patients choose to listen to music during their scan.

Communication with the MRI technologist is maintained throughout the exam via an intercom system. You can speak with the technologist at any time if you feel uncomfortable or need a pause.

When Will You Receive Results?

At Michigan Diagnostics Center, imaging reports are delivered to your referring physician within 24 hours of your scan. Your physician will then review the results with you and determine next steps in your care.
