How Long Does an MRI Scan Take?

A MRI scan typically takes between 30-60 minutes to complete, but this amount of time can vary based on the area being scanned, issues during the scan, and the number of images needed. MRI scans may be unclear if the patient doesn’t stay still during the exam. MRI scans may be prolonged, or need to be repeated if issues occur that cause the results to be unclear. The length of appointments may vary based on the number of exams recommended by the patient’s doctor.

Can I Wear My Clothes During an MRI Scan?

Diagnostic centers provide secure and private changing rooms so their patients can change into a gown before their MRI scan. If patients don’t wear a gown they will be asked to remove all jewelry and clothes that contain metal. Zippers, fasteners, buttons, underwires, belts, or buckles can interfere with the MRI scan. Patients will also have to leave all of their items, such as wallets, purses, keys, phones, and more, behind, before entering the exam room.
